Look I Painted Something!

I was unsure as to whether I'd have the time or the inclination to take some photos for the annual Pendraken painting competition, but the weather was kind and a good meeting on the support front for our son meant that I felt quite upbeat (rather unusual after meetings!). So a quick gathering together of the toys and my games cloth left me to try and take some half decent pics of the troops. David Bailey I'm not but they make a good record of what I've been up to and it's quite good to remind oneself that the efforts look pretty reasonable when on the table.

German Early WWII Infantry Battalion
This forms the core of my WWII Germans and is what has been taking up my time and energy this month. I'm happy to have finally got these completed, so now it's onto the various support troops and ATG's etc that changed throughout the War.

The core force.

The 2nd Kompanie with its HQ and Heavy Weapons attached.

The 75mm Infantry Gun and Pak 35/36 plus their tows.

FAO and FAC.

The CO.

Attached Divisional Recce bar its CO and Armoured Cars.

Pendraken Painting Competition 2023
Some of these you will have seen before but they have all been completed since last February. It's rather nice to see some of the troops that have been in their box since October.

Jagdpanther.

Panther.

Tiger II.

North West Frontier-cum-ImagiNations Mounted Infantry.

North West Frontier-cum-ImagiNations Light Infantry with attached Mountain Gun.

North West Frontier-cum-ImagiNations Brigade.

Generic Pack Horses.

North West Frontier-cum-ImagiNations Generals.

Well I hope you enjoyed seeing my efforts and as always comments are greatly appreciated.

TTFN.

  1. Hooray! Great to see a positive report to lift the spirits. You have been holding out on your painting output. Great to see your latest additions to your collections. NWF Imaginations? Have we seen this out on the gaming table?

    1. Thanks Jon and it is very rare for our son to go somewhere new and like the place, which was greatly helped by the fact that he saw many old school mates. Now the small matter of sorting out funding...

I haven't done any NWF ImagiNations per se, but as I was taking the photos I realised that these troops could be used from the Austrian border and Balkans, to North Africa and of course the NWF. Some troops for them to fight against would be good and I have some generic Brits that would be perfect. I can see the Honourable East India Company idea growing as I type!

  2. Really nice job mate, and I speak as someone who only paints 10mm these days. Top stuff.

    1. Many thanks for your kind words JBM:)! I loved your AWI troops in your latest post so am happy that you liked my efforts. Seeing some of the entries on the Pendraken forum and I really do wonder on how the hell do they paint so well and with so much detail: Optivisors?

  3. A goodly amount of goodness, I really like the CO at the table …. Did you model that or is it a Pendraken special?

    1. Thanks Norm:)! The CO is part of a command pack from Pendraken. I can't remember if it's under the 'specials' or standard infantry. There are other figures with it to. For Mid-Late War I will do a different CO with some smaller vehicles in a mix of camo schemes.

  4. A lovely lot of troops there Steve, well done. You may not know that I am a real fan of 10/12mm and have decent sized Russian and German WW2 armies as well as AWI. Maybe see some of these at Cotswold Wargames Day?

    1. Thanks for the kind words there Chris! I think I did spy your AWI troops last time I was at yours and as one would expect from you, they looked superb:). I didn't know you had WWII stuff in 10/12mm, so maybe a good excuse to get them onto the table at the CWD...

    2. Ha ha - I didn't mean mine at CWD but yours. My terrain tends not to be easily portable - for example http://notjustoldschool.blogspot.com/2018/10/advance-on-stalingrad-station-number-2.html

    3. Yep, pretty hard to easily transport your superb terrain. Thanks for the link which I had not seen before and has given me plenty of inspiration:).

  5. From David of 'Not By Appointment' fame:

    Hi Steve,
I tried posting on your latest blog post but could not get in at all; I hope others are not having the same problem! Good work on your painting and the photography is fine, nice and crisp.
    All the best,
    David.

    1. Sorry you couldn't post and Chris Gregg was having the same problem too, but then his post did appear for my approval. Many thanks for your kind words which are much appreciated:).

    1. Thanks Matt and those Afghans/NWF figures are really well sculpted and so easy to paint too. The battle for support goes on but we have to hang onto Pandora's Box...

  9. Awesome Steve, they look great! I'm particularly taken with those early-war Heer (I would be, wouldn't I?), that CO stand is absolutely gorgeous! You make me hate myself for selling off my 10mm, I'm quite envious of your gorgeous toys!

    1. Many thanks Jack! The Early War period of all Nations is fast becoming a favourite of mine, as you get some great camo schemes, tanks that aren't too powerful and the infantry have a big role to play. I used to play 15mm, but 'big' games didn't look right whereas they did in 10mm. Also 10mm was/is a lot cheaper with the only down side being my lead pile grew too quickly;).

  10. Great stuff Steve lots of variety and it all looks great - you have quite a lot of NWF/Imaginations stuff done, haven't you?!

    1. Thanks Keith and variety is the spice of life and all that. I've realised that a lot of my 19thC ImagiNations troops that were intended for Europe can easily be used for the NWF. Not surprising really given that they are the NWF Afghan range!

  11. For someone who thinks their painting skill level is not the greatest....I have news for you....your painting skills are actually very good indeed. A superb collection of figures. Well done.....Regards.

    1. Thanks for your very kind words Tony. I'm happy with the level of detail I achieve and the quite daubed nature of the highlights, which whilst they don't look good close up, work perfectly well once on the table, which is were we see them afterall:).

  12. Holding out on us indeed! those are some good looking troops and appears to be so many! Nice job. Can't believe you got so much detailed camo on those tiny tanks. 😀

    1. Thanks Stew. After a while the camo gets easy to paint, but with hindsight a bit less might have been better so that it looks good on the table. I've scene ambush camo done on Hetzers in 10mm, which takes some doing!

  13. Nicely done Steve 👏👏
I scanned the top of your post and then thought I’d just go straight to “looking at the pictures”. Hmmm - early war Germans. Imagine my confusion when, after the first half dozen pictures, I spot a Jagdpanther. What…? I should perhaps regard this as a lesson to read stuff first and check the context.
    Cheers,
    Geoff

    1. Thanks Geoff:). Easily done to scan a post and miss the context, which I know I've done in the past. To err is human and all that;)
