IPMS Avon & Lincombe Barn Show 2025

For many years now, the local IPMS Avon Show has included a small wargames section organised by Lincombe Barn, one of the oldest wargames clubs in the country. These past few years I've been away when it's been on, but not so this year. After dropping off SWMBO at our son's, I made the short trip up to Thornbury Leisure Centre, the venue for the show and arrived not long after it opened. I'll leave my thoughts until later, as frankly most people will simply want to look at the photos!

Mars-la-Tour, Franco-Prussian War, 1870. I believe it is meant to depict 'von Bredow's Death Ride'.

Loads of lovely and well painted 28mm figures.

I imagine this is von Bredow and chums...

French cavalry about to ride down their compatriots?

Classic cotton wool to represent firing, which did look very effective from a distance.

20mm ACW by Lincombe Barn Wargames Club.

This river looked rather good I must admit.

All the terrain was nicely done, nothing too fancy and the sort of thing you could easily do at home.

I'm not sure who put on this game, but it was using 'Never Mind The Billhooks' rules.

Lots of very nice 28mm figures.

A nice touch with the detailing on this tent.

Dogs of War and the '45 Jacobite Rebellion.

There in madness lies when trying to paint tartan;)!

The lighting was bad in this hall, so hard to get some nice photos.

I'm not sure who will come off best in this clash...

Again, sadly no idea who put on this game, but certainly Epic scale Punic Wars and using Hail Caesar! rules.

Always nice to see a temple.

Elephants are de rigour for the Punic wars! A very nice game and again one that is easily replicated at home.

Officer's Mess and some Englsih Civil War skirmish action.

Very nice 28mm figures, but again hard to tell with the lighting:(.

Thoughts On The Show
I was feeling a bit off colour as I had had a cold the day before and was still recovering, so I didn't spend as much time there as in previous years. Nevertheless it was good to get out and get a bit of a gaming and modelling fix. So a few observations on the show itself in no particular order:
  • It was certainly well attended this year, with a broader mix of people and children than in previous years, which was good to see.
  • The amount of stunning models on show is almost too much to take in. Being a bit off on the day, I didn't take it all in as in previous years, which was a shame, as there is just sooooo much to see.
  • It was incredibly stuffy and humid in the 3 halls, which actually made it uncomfortable at times, requiring many of us to pop out for a breath of fresh air!
  • The quality of games was up on previous years, with more historical games than before, which is really what I come to see. However about 50% of the games were Fantasy and Sci-Fi, which certainly drew in many of the younger attendees, who hopefully might have had a gander at the historical games too.
  • In this day of contactless or card payments being the norm, it came as a bit of a surprise to see how many traders were only accepting cash. I honestly can't remember when I last used cash for a purchase! I really should have anticipated this, but maybe it was a blessing in disguise, as I was tempted by some very good offers on some model kits;)!
  • I think all of the games were ones that anyone could easily put on at the club or at home, rather than many of the OTT ones that are often seen at shows. Whilst these are of course inspiring to see, you do need to make the game as accessible as possible, especially for new entrants into the hobby.
  • There were some competition games at the show, with DBA and Art de la Guerre being the rules in use. Now I know these are competition games and have a quick turnaround, but honestly there was barely any effort put on into making the games even nominally attractive to the passing punter:(! 'Must try harder' is the report card on this one...

Purchases
I did treat myself to the following kit, as it's one of those aeroplanes that I always loved as a kid, especially the SCW camo scheme as shown on the box art. Perfect for my Early War games, even if a little on the large size, but more on that in another post. Apparently the Ju-87's were used for pre-planned attacks and the Hs123 more for 'cab rank' type ones.

I could have bought more kits for use in the Pacific War and frankly for pure nostalgia reasons, but the aforementioned lack of ready cash put pay to that;)!

What Next?
Well the prep for the next Normandy campaign game continues apace, alongside some terrain modelling, which I hope to get finished before our holiday in just over a weeks time. As always the best laid plans of mice and men and all that!

TTFN.

  1. since modelling was the core of the show and sci/fi - fantasy made s strong showing, then the historical exponent did really well with much to see and be inspired by. Game mats have certainly become embedded in the gaming world, some very nice examples there.

I wonder if the cash thing is because of previous problems accessing an internet signal at the venue? I went to a show where it seamed quite hit and miss for the trader to get a signal to accept a card payment.

    1. In previous years the historical games have been about only 1/3 of the games, so nice to see them catching up with the GW crowd:). Games mats really do make such a difference, don't they? I still have my plain old green GW one that is still going strong and am loathed to part with it.

There was no problem with the signal, as the 'bigger' traders had card machines an/or their mobile phones. I think the one man band guys accepted cash to keep it off the books (cynical me!) or the prices charged meant that the mobile banking fees took any profit away. Our local hardware store only accepts card payments for over £5.00 for this reason:(.

    1. Thanks Richard and am feeling much better now. The show like many has good and not so good years, this being a better one for sure.

  3. Good to see you out and attending a show! Too bad you were a little under the weather. A lot of good-looking games and a lot of Ancients in Epic scale. That must be the new fad. I thought the FPW game looked especially nice. Were the games a mix of demo and participation?

    1. Thanks Jon and it was nice to get out and about on my own for once! I think the Epic craze is continuing for sure, but the first time I think I've really seen it at a show. I think the games were mainly demo, but I'm sure some chaps would have let you roll some dice, make decisions etc.

    1. A good mix for sure Andre, but if you're into planes and tanks, then the models on show would have been manna from Heaven!

  5. Cracking looking games Steve and as you say all could be replicated at home or at a club, good to see.

    1. Always good to see games that are achievable at home, both size wise and on the budget front too:).

  6. I must be a cynic too, Steve, that was exactly my first thought about "cash only" sales!
The show looked good - the ACW game is certainly something you could do at home, with most of the figures seeming to be "ye olde" Airfix!

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only cynic re: the cash sales Keith;)! It was nice to catch a glimpse of the classic Airfix figures, but sadly I wasn't feeling up to having a chat and a proper look:(.

  7. Nice show Steve and some great looking games on show, you can see my Henschel burning in the sky in our last battle…enjoy making the model 👍

    1. Certainly a good local show, with plenty to offer gamers and modellers alike:). I saw the Hs123 in your latest post, which doesn't bode well for mine;! I will certainly enjoy the build and the painting, once I've decided which camo scheme to go for...

  8. Thanks for the pics Steve. It looks a decent show 👏👏
I remember that Henschel well - the box art is very reminiscent of my time spent poring over Airfix catalogues. Good times 😊
    Enjoy your holiday. 😎
    Cheers,

    1. You're welcome Geoff:)! Many an evening was spent gazing at all the images within the Airfix catalogue, being especially inspired by the art on display. Most of our games were based upon what kits we could get as well as the ones we really liked. Historical accuracy be damned, but we had fun!!!

    Thanks for sharing.

  11. Great report, Steve…and lots of crackin’ pics! It certainly was a big show.
It was my first time attending, drawn along with eleven others by the DBA tournament. With six games in a day, we had very little time to look around, just brief trawl through the bring n buy and a look at some of the nearby displays. Most impressive, though, and well above my level of competence, modelling-wise.

    1. Thanks Martin:)! Lots to take in for sure spread over 3 halls, one of which was not easy to find straightaway, where your competition was. 6 games is a lot to fit in, even with the 'speed' of DBA. I hope you weren't too tired by the end?

    2. Impressive show, and multiple halls full of goodies, for sure. I’m sure I didn’t spot half the games you showed in your report.
The DBA days are pretty intense, but it’s that sort of experience, playing fast play and quick turn around. Most of us are pretty used to the mad rush by now…one guy is still a regular on the circuit at 85 😯, not sure how he does it!. No, not too tired to drive, but working up to it (05:15 up, 09:00 at the venue, home by ?6:30, fall over). I sympathise with your previous reports on visits to the Newark shows on that front. Long days, but we still choose to go 🙂.
Your report was a good way to see ‘what we might have seen, given the time’. So thanks!

    3. I think we have to accept the 'long days' sometimes, to allow us to get that good 'wargaming fix' in. I'm obviously lacking some good old 'moral fibre', as I couldn't cope with 6 games in one day;)!

    1. Being an IPMS show in the main, it doesn't get much coverage, but there is plenty to see and inspire in the models front for sure. SWMBO returns to school in just over a week, so most likely the kids will bring their viruses for her to bring home to share;)!
