Having done some trial BUA's a few years ago for my more European buildings, I finally got around to make some bases for the buildings in the run up and over the Xmas period. I've been meaning to do this for years, so it was rather nice to actually finish a few. There are some still to follow, but the recent freezing weather has meant I haven't been able to make any bases, nor prime them.
As before, the buildings are all from Leven Miniatures, with the walls from Commission Figurines and the flock various standard railway model materials.

I enjoyed making these as they are pretty easy to do and require little painting, which is nice when the muse is not upon one for that activity. They do take time, especially at this time of year, for the glue and lacquer to dry. In the Summer you could almost finish one in a day at a psuh. Personally I like to take my time to do the, trying to get a mix of practicality with a nice cohesive look with the rest of my terrain.
In Other News
I have been doing a fair bit of painting of late as I try to work my way through those projects that have sat partially started for far too long. But more on that in another post once the bases have been flocked, so hopefully in the next few days.
I also have a game set up to play in the next day or so, using a set of rules I've had for years but never actually used! Some of the set up can be seen in the background of the photos above. I'm trying to get a game in a week if I can, and these smaller actions which are planned, are easier to set up and run that most of the bigger games I play. But again more on that in due course.
Thanks for reading and as always, if you can, leave a comment as they are greatly appreciated!
TTFN.
They look great Steve. Well done. I have that barn.
ReplyDeleteLeven seems to have disappeared. Which is a shame because I have a hankering for more ‘stuff’.
Chris/Nundanket
Thanks Chris:)! Mick of Leven Miniatures was ill from Autumn last year and hoped to be back up and running before Xmas. Then I heard he was trying to train his family in how to cast stuff up, to keep things going. No news since then I'm afraid. I love his stuff and like you, fancy a few more items.
DeleteAs expected from your talented hand, fine work on sprucing up your buildings to make a handful of handsome BUAs.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jon:)!
DeleteThey really are very nice Steve...as they should be, given your previous profession!
ReplyDelete6mm I assume? I have been trying to find 10mm buildings suitable for my EIR collection but not having a lot of luck. I did buy two pdf's from "Paper Boys" for Ancient terrain and buildings, but I am not sure my paper cutting skills are up to the challenge...the first two "native" dwellings I tried doing ended in screwed up balls of paper in the rubbish bin!
Looking forward to seeing your game, and I hope you manage to keep to the " game a week" schedule.....you might motivate me to do the same!
Thanks Keith and for me it's nice to keep my hand in making stuff, without the pressure of deadlines and stupid clients! It was your comment re: my games room that motivated me to try and get a game per week in:). I still forget how easy it is to set up something up and leave it for as long as I want as it's still pretty new to me really.
DeleteAs for 10mm buildings, check the following out, which hopefully will have something you might like:

Of course the other option is to find some stl. files that you can get someone to print locally. Hope this helps?
BTW, I thought you might like to see what Jon Bleasdale has been up to with his EIR campaign in Britain:

Very impressive Steve 👏👏
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Geoff
Thanks Geoff!
DeleteLovely looking buildings, should look the part on the table, very nice work, really like the stand alone barn, cracking little model.
ReplyDeleteThanks Donnie and the Leven Miniatures models really do paint up well:).
DeleteYou have done a fantastic job on those buildings and bases Steve. They would certainly grace any table.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for your kind words Richard:)!
DeleteThey are really nice and I want to copy them! The only slight reluctance I have is that my current method (having the bases, walls and buildings separate, in effect) is that it does give maximum flexibility between the best 'look' for 1:1 skirmish games, moderate sized battles and really big games, by allowing different configurations to visually represent different sizes and types of BUA, whether that is aesthetic only or sometimes to reflect mechanical differences. Maybe I need to compromise, and have the fixed type BUA for OHW-type scenarios, and leave the rest as more flexible.
ReplyDeleteThanks John! I found this the best compromise for me for the rules I use most of the time. The bases are 3" x 3" or 4" x 3", which helps things fit together nicely. The buildings are free standing, so can be removed and used to create something different as required. So if I want a really big BUA, I can simply put the buildings on another set of bases I have, or free stand them with walls and hedges etc. So I get the best of both Worlds really.
DeleteAnd still a few more to do. They look really good BUAs Steve. I would like to do the same but lack of the space I would need for 20mm versions makes it difficult.
ReplyDeleteGlad you like them Jim:). I use 6mm buildings for my 10mm figures, so maybe 15mm buildings for your 20mm ones might work OK?
DeleteLovely job Steve. Very nice indeed.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mark:)!
DeleteLovely BUAs, nicely proportioned and a great finish!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks Iain:). Size wise they accomodate my standard unit sizes, whether it be for BKCII or say Honours of War, which was the driving factor.
DeleteThose are just splendid and a grand advertisement for the smaller scales in our hobby!
ReplyDeleteThanks David and glad they showcased smaller scale figures, which is one of the aims of this Blog:).
DeleteLovely work 👍🏼….I’m very partial to a BUA 🙂. Now you’ve got me looking through the Commission site for some wall to add to an order. They look very effective.
ReplyDeleteThanks Martin:)! The Commission Figurine walls are very nice and being made of mdf, are very easy to cut to length.
