I was feeling somewhat jaded this morning after a lack of sleep, but with a glorious day beckoning and some chocolate (the choice of champions😉) to kick start my old body, I headed off to Newbury racecourse for this years Colours wargames show. I met my good friend Keith Flint at the entrance and we were soon inside, ready for what the show had to offer.
I must admit I was filled with some trepidation after last years poor showing games wise, but had high hopes as the games on offer looked to be pretty good. In the end I need not have worried😊. So without further ado, let's start with the photos which frankly is what most people want to see!
|
Just for you Chris😉. |
|
A lovely game in 28mm using Chain of Command rules. |
|
Lots of nice details all over the board. |
|
Excellent reference books. |
|
Postcards for the 'discerning gentleman wargamer'. |
|
Simon Millar & Co putting on a lovely game as always. |
|
The Battle of Ilipa 206BC. You can tell from the faces what it's like to play DBM... |
|
War of the Roses is certainly the flavour of the month at present. |
|
Really nicely painted figures. |
|
This was a very popular game, with a slice of the action from Borodino, namely the Raevsky Redoubt. |
|
Some excellent scenery on display along with lovely figures. |
|
A lovely Operation Sealion game, which had lots of admirers. |
|
Another General d'Armee game, but using the original rules. This was listed as Anglo-Ottoman War 1809... |
|
The guys playing were having fun and things seemed to moving along at a fair old lick. |
|
Salamanca 1812. |
|
Loads of 54mm (?) figures on display. |
|
A Burrows & Badgers game. Very impressive. |
|
A medieval skirmish game. |
|
I loved these chaps that looked like Wombles to me, given their 'girth'! |
|
Abbevilla France 1940. A Bruce Weigle game that was originally going to be Belgium 1940 I believe. |
|
Nice scratch built buildings, but the 3mm figures etc were hard to make out. |
|
The Liverpool chaps always seem to put on a great Samurai game. |
|
Oxford Wargames Club and Borodino 1812, from the Napoleonic BBB book. |
|
Well done to Chris Pringle & Co who even managed to get a Warhammer 40K player playing this and having fun too! |
|
Anschluss Games, Italy 1944. |
|
The Battle for Downham Marker 1870. An Invasion scare type setting, of particular interest as my Dad now lives there. |
|
An 0200 Hours game, with the objective to capture Rommel. |
|
The only two books I bought, but very happy with these. |
|
My only purchase aside from books, a 6mm Battlescale ACW church from Pendraken. |
Post Show Thoughts
In the end we spent just shy if 4 hours at the show, which I think is a record for me! So as always some musings on the day out:
- Well the show was certainly a vast improvement upon last year, certainly on the games front, which was great to see. For me it was in the 'last chance saloon', but this is no longer the case, which I'm thankful for, as I do like the show on many levels. Colours certainly came back with a bang!
- I don't think I've bumped into so many gamers I know and I reckon Keith and I spent well over and hour just chatting with friends, which was a real pleasure. That social aspect was something we all commented upon and agreed was one of the reasons for attending.
- The quality of games this year was pretty damned good right across the board, from those small games we could all put on at home to those inspirational ones we all like to see at a show. In fact Keith and I did ponder on whether we might put on a game ourselves next year. Too early to tell but you never know...
- It was good to see most of the games had a info sheet of sign next to the table, which was so helpful when trying to figure out what was going on, and as an aide memoire from the photos when writing this post up.
- The show seemed less busy than last year, so I hope the traders did some decent business. It was certainly easier to move around on the ground floor where most of them are and to actually see their wares, which is often not always possible. Certianly no rucksack incidents this year!
- Once again the pricing of books on offer was bizarre, depending upon who you went to. So wise to have a good wander round before parting with your hard earned cash. The two Rapid Fire scenario books cost me about the same price as buying one from the Rapid Fire chaps themselves! Some of the prices being charged was mind boggling, knowing full well that with a bit of patience and shopping around online, you can get them much cheaper. I know they have to cover their costs, but there is a limit!
- Chatting away we talked a lot about what scale of actions we like and why, plus how much detail and granularity we want to go into. Ditto what size games we can play at home and how much time we have to do so. Alongside this was talk of how many more figures or armies do we need at our ages (60's) and how long we can continue to paint the smaller scale figures. I think it seems we are all pondering significant downsizing in the next few years or so.
I'm sure there's more I might remember later to past about, but that'll do for now. I hope you enjoyed my selective view of the show and games and if so, it would be lovely for you to leave a comment.
Keith is coming over for a WWII game on Monday, so plenty to get ready for that. I've also started painting again with the CWD some 5 weeks away now, so need to knuckle down. Hopefully some photos to show on that front in the next few days...
TTFN.
Looks like it was a good one Steve. I was pondering going but I was tied up until 12 (learning how to speak like the good guys in the first game) and I would have spent more time driving than actually there. Maybe the date will fall kindly next year.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the pics by the way. Fantastic models.
Chris
It was a very good show Chris as I got to see it with Keith, giving us plenty of time to chat etc. For once I spent more time there than driving, which was something we commented on during the day. Glad you enjoyed the photos and there was more to enjoy on the Winter War table for sure.
DeleteA lovely looking selection of games on display there Steve and must be nice to catch up with a few like minded people!
ReplyDeleteI do wish people would stop talking about downsizing etc....my wife might hear, and she would whole heartedly agree....we had a "discussion " about it recently 🙄
There were Keith and I think they all had something to interest me, which has not always been the case at the show. Seeing so many friends there was great and just a chance for us all to chew the cud, which is a rare thing these days.
DeleteWe did talk about the downsizing at Chris Gregg's recently too, so it's something that is on our minds for sure. Now as a gamer who paints, I feel less need to keep topping up the leadpile, preferring to try and paint figures to get games in. This was not always the case, but in our chats we are moving all considering what can we realistically achieve on the next 5 years or so before age does really start to catch up with us! Hopefully you reached an amicable outcome with SWMBO in your recent 'discussion'...
Looks like a day very well-spent!
ReplyDeleteIt was indeed Bill:)!
DeleteExcellent assortment of games with a seeming emphasis on Napoleonics. Good to see you having an enjoyable day out with Keith.
ReplyDeleteThis year did deature a lot of Napoleonic games for sure. Seeing the option of playing all of Borodino on a 6' x 4' table versus a slice of the action gave us plenty to talk about and which we might prefer to do, or even to go down the board games route. It was great to see the show with Keith and peruse all the wares on display.
DeleteHi Steve, looked a great show. I would be happy to have sat at any of those tables, though I must admit to spending extra time looking at the Raevsky Redoubt and Sealion games!
ReplyDeleteI’m sure that you will love the Rapid Fire booklets, I have them all and love them. The Crete one especially useful to you for reasons of subject and that the order-of-battle so easily translates to the. BKC rules.
It was Norm:). The Sealion one was a labour of love for sure, but the Raevsky Redoubt just ticked so many boxes. I think we all liked that game, as it was a great mix of superb terrain and figures, but not too far removed from what most gamers could achieve.
DeleteThe RF booklets are very good, having had a quick look at them last night. Ditto the Blitzkreig one I picked up at Partizan. The OOB do easily translate, with a guide of how to go about it on the old Commanders forum.
Really great show!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for a report sir!
Glad you enjoyed it Michal!
Delete"You can tell from the faces..." The two on the left are on a lunch break. The one on the right isn't one of the players.
ReplyDeleteI was being cheeky and apologies as no offence was intended. Been there and done that on the tired look at lunchtime, so feel for the guys with the thousand yard stares. The game certainly was busy when we first turned up, which was great to see.
DeleteColours certainly looks good Steve. Thanks for all the pics 👍
ReplyDeleteI’m glad you enjoyed the event - it’s always good to get out and about, to see what gaming others are doing (you never know when/where you might spot something interesting or an idea you can borrow for your own games). The terrain looks great - that for Italy 1944 being especially nice and it would doubtless be a pleasure to fight on that battlefield.
I hope all goes well with your forthcoming CWD game. Good luck ⚔️⚔️
Cheers,
Geoff
It was a good show this year Geoff, which was nice to see. Always plenty of inspiration to be found for sure and of course nice just to catch up with friends. A CWD update soon with luck...
DeleteNice show report and I enjoyed the pictures. Everyone loves a show report.
ReplyDeleteIt’s extra nice when all the old faces show up as well. 😀
Glad you enjoyed it Stew! Not many young faces, or at least to my eyes anyway, certainly a case of the greying of the hobby on show;).
DeleteHi Steve, Guy Farrish here - unable to comment as my Google account for some reason - apologies, its happened before and I thought I'd fixed it - apparently not!
ReplyDeleteGreat report, thoroughly enjoyed it. No need to spend all that money on petrol and entry! And I saved all those impulse purchases that leave me wondering what I am going to do with 100 Ashigaru in rain capes!
I loved them by the way - the rice straw makes them look just like Wombles - an invasion of Wimbledon Common game perhaps? I suspect that is against the ethos of Wombling Free.
Lots of lovely looking games. I particularly liked the look of the figures in the1708 game. I will resist!
Borodino in its entirety by Chris Pringle was ambitious but no doubt eminently doable with his rules.
Thanks again, and good to hear you had such a good day out.
Hi Guy, ah the joys of technology! Glad you enjoyed it and could vicariously enjoy the show without shelling out any money😉. Now you've got me thinking about Womble themed games, which I must get out of my head - eventually! So many games to inspire one and at all different levels, from small skirmish level squard games right up to all of Borodino, so what's not to like? Hope you can make it next year...
DeleteGreat to see you and Keith again, as always, Steve. Wish we'd had longer to chat. I must get to a Cotswold Games Day! Thanks for the namecheck - I've reciprocated in my own show report here: https://bloodybigbattles.blogspot.com/2024/09/colours-2024-borodino.html
ReplyDeleteLikewise you and the Oxford chaps Chris! Hope you can make it to the day, whether as a visitor or to run a game...
DeleteThank you Steve for sharing your visit, it’s very much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I can't always get to a show to appreciate it when others post show reports so we can all enjoy:).
DeleteLooks like it was a really good show, nice games, don't think it was DBM, think it was To the Strongest! They're a nice crowd I did a tournament with them before covid, glad it's improved, if you did a game I might even consider going again!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain caveadsum1471
It was indeed Iain and a good bunch of people right across the baord. The game was down as DBM (I think) and they had a copy/copies of the rules by the table, but naturally I could be wrong! Well some incentive to put on a game then old chap!
DeleteShow organisers here with a quick fact check. Numbers were up 300 on last year. Traders happy and glad the demo games went down well
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback and of course great to see numbers up and the traders happy. When we left people were still arriving which was good to see.
DeleteSome excellent photos, some things I didn't get to see even though I was there! A great write up too. I definitely think you should bring a table next year, without volunteers demonstrating there would be nothing to see!
ReplyDeleteThanks Peter! It's quite easy to miss things in a show and I realised once on the way home I forgot to photo the games on the first floor, which were nice too. Another incentive to put on a game, so maybe Keith and I need to have a chat...
DeleteLovely photos - I especially like the tricorne and Napoleonic tables.
ReplyDeleteThanks Andre and I loved those tables too:)!
