Throwing In The Towel...

Well Blogger is really playing such silly buggers at present for me (and others too), to the point that I'm seriously considering giving up Blogging. Two of my three recent posts have simply not appeared in people's Feeds or Reading lists. Why some are and others are not is beyond the ken of man! Given all the effort often involved, why bother if nobody can see it, unless they check the Blog domain.

So this is a bit of a test to see if this post appears and, if so, I'd greatly appreciate other Bloggers letting me know.

Also, could you let me know if you've seen the following in your Feeds:

This was posted at 22.06 BST in the UK.

Very, very miffed from Bristol.

  1. Frustrating, for sure, Steve. I guess we need to re-evaluate why we blog. This latest ordeal of delayed blogroll appearance has clarified in my mind that I do blog to see the interaction with readers and simply not for my own enjoyment and recordkeeping.

My latest post in blogroll from you is your Poland post. This post has not yet appeared but it is early in the cycle. Why some bloggers’ posts show up and others do not is a mystery to me.

  2. Well, this post showed up on blogroll in less than three hours.

  3. Hi Steve - I have seen it on Jons "Blogs Followed" section. I will check out the URL links now - maybe we all just need to start clicking on the hyperlink of the people who comment on our posts, to see if the commenter has posted recently?
I certainly don't want to see you give up posting mate!

    2. And now my post is there too - but its 8pm Saturday 27 and I definitely posted it around 10am - and I have checked more recently than 4pm and it wasn't there.... a bit irritating but as long as they turn up, I can live with it and keep on blogging!

I hope this sorts itself out soon.

  11. Good Morning Steve, apparently a cooler one, with tomorrow being normal! … we shall see :-)

It is now 8.04 and I can see your post, but I didn’t see it an hour and a half ago.

I did see the Brenda post (commented) but to date the summer 76 has not pulled through and of course now won’t because this latest post is well …. The latest post.

I’m really not sure what to make of Blogger at the moment. I am amid one of my longer posts for a close look at the Test & Resolve rules for Wars of the Roses and must admit that my enthusiasm to do the rest of the work on it is diminishing.

I suppose we are stuck with the question of how much Google want to push resources at it. The alternatives are slim pickings. Steve W is working with WordPress, I used to think that that was class leader, but to date I have found his blog harder to interact with than a blogger blog, so who knows.

I suppose that I don’t fully understand ‘readers’, I have no idea for example how to check with Blogger Domain (that you mentioned), I didn’t even know it was a thing.

I also have a private bit of paid for web space, where I post snippets a few times a week and that seems to get around 35 - 40 visits on a daily basis, but I don’t know who those visitors are and even with its build in blog feature, inter-acting with an audience is difficult and frustrating, so I have that feature switched off.

Again, I don’t really understand how people follow that site, do they just check in or is there a thingy that highlights new activity to them … who knows!

What to do? I think at the moment Blogger doesn’t look broken enough to abandon it - though your summer 76 post that never turned up at all is a worrying indicator. Perhaps shorter posts for a short time with less investment might just help keep the wheels moving while this hopefully settles down.

After posting this, I am going to do a feedback thing to google to highlight the issue, hopefully they get enough responses to make it a ‘thing’ for them. We might think our blog universe is giving way to faceBook groups and video etc, but we are just a small part of the blogosphere, loads of people have specialist blogs from artists to cake makers to bike restorers, I am guessing the user group is still pretty huge and that Google will still support. It.

If they move to an advertising basis then I would stop, my view is that blogs that carry adverts just have too much visual distraction, it sends a message to the audience that posts are made for commercial reasons rather than passion and is just another thing that adds to the colour being sucked out of the world.

Anyway, my vote is keep plodding on.

    1. Thanks for you thoughtful response Norm:)! With my Blog layout, the Reading List shows anyones posts, no matter how old, as long as you scroll down far enough. Even if someone put up 3 posts in succession, they would all show, not just the latest one. Years ago I gave up following Word Press sites, as from memory, I had to subscribe to each topic, which sent notifications to my e-mail, thereby clogging it up no end. With your other site, I check in each day just to see if there's anything new. Currently Blogs are by far and away the easiest way to keep in touch with regards to our hobby. Of course there as various Forums, but I like the fact that I can select those Blogs that I enjoy and the content contained therein, rather than having to scroll through posts that are of no interest to me.

I don't mind doing a long post (even my short AAR's take at least an hour), as long as I know people can be notified that it's there. If they don't want to comment, no problem, but I just want to feel confident that it is out there for all to see.

  12. Hi Steve, it is all rather frustrating isn't it? This post appeared on my 'blogs followed' widget first thing this morning (Sat 27th) but 'Summer of 76' and 'Brenda' didn't appear at all!
I think I am going to end up placing less reliance on the 'blog roll' and just go directly to certain favourites every so often (including yours of course!)

  15. I have found all the posts but I only go to my bookmarks every now and then rather than receive notifications. This explains why I do not always comment as by the time I read your words, always interesting and food for thought, there have been umpteen other comments to which I can't usefully add. Along with others, I would be very sorry to see you give up.

    1. As long as you are able to access the posts, that's great, but it appears to be an issue on the noticifications front which is the problem. I rely upon my Reading List on Blogger to keep up to speed with what other gamers have been up to.

  16. I'm with Ashley. If by 'blog roll' you all mean the list of blogs that you can add to your layout page using the 'Blog List gadget', then they have been appearing in mine without a hitch.

  17. I hope you do continue blogging, Steve! I have not been logging into my blog so much of late because of the damned heat - still horribly muggy here today too. The blog tells me your Summer of 76 post appeared in my Reading list 18 hours ago and your Throwing In The Trowel post 17 hours ago but I have had no notification of the Brenda post. Like others, I will chase up blogs anyway even if I have no notification as they are on my list of favourites - as yours is! I do try to post comments but lately it has been more of a struggle, I confess. It often seems to come down to using limited energy and time to work on flags for the blog or chase up blogs and post comments, trying to say something fresh and different. Tricky!

  19. My last two posts have turned up with in an hour or two. I now time mine for 12-24 hour apearance...I usually have a few posts sitting in preparation so I can time them as I like. I have also got into the habit of checking for 'Newer Posts' and 'Older Posts' links that allow me to catch any missed posts.

"There is also a problem with the cache, reported in another thread. The Reading List / Blog List seems to display cached content rather than the latest posts from the feed. I've already passed this on to the team.

    //edit//
Unfortunately, this issue hasn't been fixed for everyone yet. The team is still working on it."

  23. Hi Steve.
Sorry, I can’t help on the feed point. I’m a heretic, don’t use the blog feed option and just check a list of my fave blogs, inc your own, using bookmarks on a daily basis.
Your efforts are very much appreciated, and I’ll add my ‘vote’ to those suggesting that you DON’T give up on blogging. Even if folks wait a little while to be notified that your new post is out, they are still in the loop….AND your blog is an excellent record for yourself of ‘What I did in the Hobby this Year/Month…’ (all I do is record on an iPad my ‘Games Played 202x’ and ‘Hobby Progress’ with items painted and literature read….nowhere near the quality of your blog posts).
So, “Nil Carborundum Illegitimi….”, as my Dad used to say. 🙂👍🏼
    All the best

  28. Hi Steve - it’s a bit of a bu99er if blog posts keep getting lost or somehow disappear into the ether 😡☹️
TBH every few days I check my “favourite” blogs (yours, naturally, is one of these) to see if there’s been anything new posted since I last looked. I tried a few years ago to see if “notifications” would work for me but No, they didn’t which is why I now check manually.
I did see your AVBCW post, but hadn’t spotted the more recent one. That’s most likely down to me though, as real life keeps distracting me from hobby stuff ☹️
I very much do look forward to reading your blog posts - well painted figures, lovely terrain and ideally an exciting wargame too. It’s always good to see what others are doing and hope to achieve/work towards. Inspiration 😎
Fingers crossed the situation is soon resolved.
    Cheers,

    1. Thanks for the feedback Geoff:)! Sadly the problem seems to have reared its head again, with delayed posts of varying length, posts appearing after ones that were published many hours later. So currently I'm having to scroll down the Reading List until I hit about 2-3 Days since posting, just to be sure. Quicker than checking individual Blogs, but frsutrating nonetheless!
