Some New French Buildings

For the next part in my French-Canadians in Normandy campaign, I wanted to add some more buildings, specifically that ones that has a more 'French' feel to them. These have been a WIP for some time now, so after finishing a batch of PzIV's, I decided to plough on with these and at least get a decent number finished. All of the following are from the Battlescale 6mm range and are based upon 3" x 3" bases.

A cottage with some Pendraken 6mm MDF fencing for some detailing.

A bit of a vegetable garden at the back, that I might add some colour to to represent tomatoes, strawberries etc. Also the red will make the green look more intense.

A farm or stable yard, with a cobbled forecourt. The walls are MDF offcuts coated with a mix of PVA glue and Fine Surface Polyfilla.

The walls have some lovely raised details of stones or bricks sticking out that I chose to pick out to and some visual detail.

One of my newly painted 10mm PzIV's to give an idea of scale.

A house with some additional wings added.

The walls are made from cork and again coated with PVA glue and Fine Surface Polyfilla.

I have a few more in the queue and a church too, that I'd like to get finished before the next campaign game, but let's see if the Muse stays with me or moves back to painting some AFV's. I also need to add some figures to a mix of AFV's for command vehicles etc, for use in my BKCII games. This might be a priority as we have some decent weather forecast these next few days, so I can get some priming done.

Thanks for reading and as always, any comments greatly appreciated!

  4. Top notch and soooo neat. Love the little garden plots. I think you’re a frustrated railway modeller at heart.

    1. Thanks Mark:)! I can't remember when I started adding more detail to my BUA bases, but it is fun to do and they look so much nicer on the table. It's always a tricky balance between the detail, durability and game play, as it would be very easy to go full on railway modeller mode!

  5. Those look great, Steve, and it just hit me: do you use 6mm buildings with your 10mm WWII BKC forces?

    1. Thanks Jack:)! Yep, I've used 6mm buildings with all of my 10mm forces for a very long time now. They don't look out of scale at all once on the table and the smaller foot print size means you can get a better feel for a village in the same area compared to 10mm ones.

    2. Steve,

Indeed, they look fantastic on the table, I can’t believe I didn’t realize that sooner.

    3. Unless you get shots like the PzIV on the cobbled yard, you really don't notice the difference in scale at all when everything is on the table and you have the 'God's eye view' of the game.

  6. Very nice indeed Steve, they really look the part, very handy and should look great on the table. I too like the look of smaller scale buildings, works well on the table and the foot print is really handy in no taking up as much room.

    1. Thanks Donnie:)! Once on the table, you don't really notice the scale difference, as the 'Z' height looks 'right' as it were.

  7. These look really good to me. While I understand the usefulness of smaller scales for wargaming I find my eye is always drawn to the buildings and away from the troops. As my main interest is the uniforms [perhaps I'm more collector than gamer] I like to focus on the figures. I don't know how others feel. Nevertheless these buildings would draw my eye in admiration - lovely work.

    1. Thanks:)! The buildings do tend to pop more in the smaller scales, as even bright colours do not cover that much of a uniform. The beauty of our hobby is that covers a wide variety of likes and interests, so if it's the uniforms that work for oyu, then that's all that matters:).

  8. Great looking BUAs, good to be regionally specific I think? Ive just been photographing some new BUAs and I agree ,you need figures/vehicles for context and I echo Mark, well done on not going full on railway enthusiast!

    1. Thanks Iain and certainly nice to have BUA's that sort of look 'right' for the area/period being gamed. At many shows I look at some of the superb terrain on show and wonder how the Hell do they store it all, without it being damaged etc? So my stuff has to be stackable (to some extent) and so durable!

  10. Although I'm not a small scale wargamer I do enjoy seeing the smaller scale buildings and scenic bases. These are simply smashing SteveJ, a joy to see and an inspiration for my bigger stuff!
